Saint John: Small But Charming
When we arrived, we were the only plane at the airport. We had to walk from the plane to the airport. The Saint John Airport has one main area with one baggage claim area by all the car rentals and check-in counter(s).
The city centre is called Uptown; there's no such thing as downtown. The rest of Saint John is divided into North End, East Side, and West Side. The university is in the North End.
There are two large hotels here: the Delta, where I'm staying, and the Hilton. The rest are local inns. From the hotel, it's about 25 minutes to get to the university by bus, and that's with the bus taking detours into residential areas. It's that crazy small.
They charge a 10¢ deposit for bottles of pop. When you bring it back, you get a 5¢ refund.
My mom, aunt and I walked around the southeastern part of Uptown Saint John today. There really is not much to see. The shops and markets are small, with lots of little restaurants scattered around. But the place has a mix of old Markham charm and the rolling hills of San Francisco. People here are very friendly too.
We bought 6 small, Sunkist oranges for $2. Fruits and veggies are slightly more expensive than Ontario.
We walked around my UNB campus today. I think the registration lady calculated something wrong. She thought that my scholarship is $1000 per semester, when it really is $500 per semester ... oh well? The campus is pretty tiny too. Every building is within 10 minutes walk from residence. The grounds is gorgeous though. Very relaxing.
We've only been here for two days and we've already run out of things to see/do. Is that bad? That's what we get for not renting a car. Though, the roads here are curvy, much like European roads.
